Rockabilly is always a hard genre to describe and classify. Combining elements of the old and new to create a bizarre hybrid, Rockabilly can be extremely entertaining if done well. The genre includes such diverse bands as The Stray Cats, The Cramps and Mojo Nixon.

Stick in the middle of that Slick Pelt, which combines rockabilly with country rhythms and surf punk attitude. It definitely fits in with the back to roots craze that has been going on the last few years with the rebirth of swing. Despite the country elements, or perhaps because of them, Slick Pelt maintain a sense of humor throughout the CD.

Slick Pelt are Mike "Chops" LaConte on slap bass and background vocals; Tom "Goose" Seguso on drums; Michael "Nipsy" Louis on guitars and background vocals; and Manny "Willy" Berlingo on vocals. Listeners maintaining an open mind can really have a lot of fun listening to them, and many reviews I read cited their live shows as exceptional.

Some of the songs are almost pure country with a bit of an edge, such as "Cowboy Song" and "Sad Songs". Many of the songs are very high energy and impossible not to tap along to once you start listening to them, like "Three Good Reasons". The band is very tight and the musicianship is first rate. I was especially impressed with Nipsy's skill and versatility on the guitar.

Slick Pelt are a very fun band to listen to. Anyone that likes good rock and roll should definitely check them out.
